You've found the course you love, and now comes the question that trips up almost everyone: what size? Choosing the right golf course print size for your wall comes down to three things: how big the wall (or the furniture under it) is, how far away people will stand, and how much detail you want to see. Here's a practical way to choose between 12x16, 18x24 and 24x32 inches, without guessing.

A quick note before the numbers: all three sizes share the same 3:4 proportions. That means a course looks identical at every size; you're only choosing how large it reads in the room. It also means mixing sizes in a gallery wall looks tidy, because the shapes match.

The three sizes at a glance

  • 12x16 inches: intimate and easy to place. Best for desks, shelves, narrow walls, hallways and gallery walls.
  • 18x24 inches: the all-rounder. Big enough to read every hole from across a small room, small enough to fit almost anywhere.
  • 24x32 inches: the statement piece. Built for large walls, over sofas, beds, bars and fireplaces.

Remember that a frame adds a little to each dimension, so check the framed measurements on the listing before you buy if the space is tight.

How to choose a golf course print size, step by step

1. Measure what's under it, not just the wall

Most art hangs above something: a sofa, a console, a bed or a desk. A widely used interior design guideline is that art should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the width of the furniture below it. A 24-inch-wide print looks right over a console of about 32 to 36 inches. A sofa of seven feet or more usually needs either a 24x32 print hung horizontally or two to three prints grouped together.

2. Think about viewing distance

Golf course maps reward a closer look. Golfers love standing in front of a print and tracing their round: where they drove it into the trees on 4, the green they three-putted on 12. If the print will be seen mostly from across a room, size up so the hole numbers and shapes are still readable. If it's above a desk or in a hallway where people walk past at arm's length, a 12x16 shows plenty of detail.

3. Check the wall height

Hang art so its center sits around 57 to 60 inches from the floor, roughly average eye level. Above furniture, leave about 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame. If those rules leave a lot of empty wall above the print, you probably need a larger size.

4. Try a paper template

The simplest test is also the most reliable. Cut kraft paper or tape together printer sheets to the size you're considering and stick it to the wall with painter's tape. Live with it for a day. Most people discover they wanted the next size up.

Which size works best in each room

Home office

Behind a desk where it shows up on video calls, an 18x24 is ideal. On a side wall you see while working, 12x16 keeps things uncluttered.

Living room

Over a sofa, go 24x32, or hang two 18x24 prints side by side with 2 to 4 inches between them. A single small print over a large sofa tends to look lost.

Golf room, den or bar

This is where a gallery wall shines. Mix one 24x32 centerpiece of a favorite course with several 12x16 prints of courses you've played. Because the proportions match, the grid stays neat.

Hallways and stairwells

Narrow spaces and close viewing favor 12x16 or 18x24. A row of matching smaller prints along a hallway can make a nice "course tour."

Bedroom

Above a queen or king bed, a 24x32 anchors the wall. Over a dresser or nightstand, choose 12x16 or 18x24.

Does course detail change the right size?

A little. Some courses are compact, while others sprawl across a coastline. Take Pebble Beach Golf Links, which opened in 1919 and runs along the cliffs above Carmel Bay. The run of holes along the water is the part people want to study, from the tiny par-3 7th to the 18th that follows the shoreline home. At 18x24 or 24x32, those coastline holes have room to breathe and the numbering is easy to read from a few steps back. At 12x16 the print is still crisp, but it's better suited to close viewing.

As a rule of thumb: if the course has a feature people love to point at, like a famous stretch of holes or an island green, a larger size pays off.

Framed or unframed?

Unframed prints are great if you already have frames or want a custom mat from a local framer. Framed prints save you the errand and arrive ready to hang. When choosing a frame color, black gives crisp contrast on light walls, white keeps things airy and modern, and green leans into a classic clubhouse feel. If you're building a gallery wall, using one frame color across every print makes mixed sizes look intentional.

If you'd like to see sizes and frames together in real rooms, our golf wall art collection shows a range of courses styled in living rooms, offices and dens.

Our quick recommendation

  • Not sure where it will hang (or buying a gift)? 18x24.
  • Over a sofa, bed or bar? 24x32.
  • Desk, shelf, hallway or gallery wall filler? 12x16.

About our prints

Every Golf Print House map is drawn in a mid-century style from real map data, with every hole outlined and numbered, so the layout is as accurate as it is good-looking. Each course, including Pebble Beach, comes in 12x16, 18x24 and 24x32 inches, unframed on museum-quality matte paper or framed in black, white or green and ready to hang. We're an independent shop, not affiliated with any course we draw.

FAQ

What is the most popular golf course print size?

For most walls, 18x24 inches is the safest choice. It reads well from across a room, fits over consoles and desks, and works as a gift when you don't know where it will hang.

What size print should go over a sofa?

Aim for art that spans about two-thirds of the sofa's width. For a typical sofa, that means a 24x32 print or a pair of 18x24 prints hung side by side.

Can I mix different print sizes on one wall?

Yes. Because our 12x16, 18x24 and 24x32 prints share the same 3:4 proportions, they line up cleanly in a gallery wall. Keep spacing consistent, about 2 to 3 inches between frames.

How high should I hang a golf course print?

Center it about 57 to 60 inches from the floor, or leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame when hanging above a sofa, console or bed.
