Two Bell Courses on the Coast
Torrey Pines sits on the California coast. William F. Bell laid out both of its courses, and both opened in 1957. With the same designer and the same opening year, the two maps look like a matched pair, but each has its own routing and its own run of holes. The South Course print, set in La Jolla, traces the Pacific coastline along its edge, so the ocean frames part of the layout. The North print places its course in San Diego and draws every fairway, green, tee, bunker and water feature from real map data.
Picking North, South or Both
Start with the course they have played or the one they talk about most. If they have played both, buy the pair in the same size with matching frames and hang them side by side.
